FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (September 24, 2022) – Graduate student Agatha Malinowski and first-year Stephanie Untermeyer scored a pair of impressive victories to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team Saturday at the ITA Atlantic South Regional Tournament, hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
After dropping their first match of the tournament, the tandem scored victories over Sweet Briar College’s Isabela and Alexandra Guillarte (8-2), before topping Johns Hopkins’ Niamh Harding and Alison Bader, 8-5 to reach the consolation semifinal. The Ducks’ tandem raced out to a 6-3 lead before the Hopkins squad won consecutive games to pull within 6-5. However, Malinowski and Untermeyer, the Middle Atlantic Conference champions at first doubles, quickly recovered and closed out the triumph by winning the last three games to score the victory. The pair would then receive a walkover victory before bowing out of the tournament. Untermeyer also scored an 8-5 victory in singles competition over Averett’s Paula Ryhsen.
“It’s always a privilege to compete at the ITA’s against the top teams in our region, and some of the best teams in the country,” head coach Arik Zeevy said. “I am very proud of our competitiveness and how we represented Stevens all weekend.”
The Ducks had four total representatives at the tournament. Joining Malinowski and Untermeyer in taking the court were sophomore Isabella Dona and junior Polina Odintseva. Dona and Odintseva opened their tournament with an 8-3 victory over Ursinus’ Alessandra Armour and Shannon Stewart. The Ducks’ duo bowed out of the tournament with a hard-fought 8-7 (7-5) setback to Averett’s Brenda Poulakidas and Keira Gunning.
